MARVEL has officially announced the start of production on Iron Man 3 and released the first photo from the set in Wilmington, North Carolina.
The image (featured in full below, click for a larger view) shows Robert Downey Jr's billionaire genius Tony Stark gazing at an array of the various suits of armour he has worn in his superhero guise as Iron Man.
Filming actually began last week and there have been several unofficial reports surfacing online. So what can we expect from this third outing for Marvel's armoured hero?
According to Comicbook.com, a production source confirmed that Mandarin (played by Ben Kingsley) was the villain and that he had "a set of twins that did most of his dirty work for him."
Latino Review, however, says Mandarin is more of a "veiled threat" and acts as the silent partner to Guy Pearce's scientist Aldrich Killian, who is the primary villain and invents Extremis - a nanotechnology virus that can create superpowered humans. These supersoldiers seem likely to be Coldblood and Firepower, whose casting was recently revealed and who may also be the "twins" who work for Mandarin.
In another twist, set photos featured on Facebook fansite Marvel Movies show actor James Badge Dale - the actor cast as Eric Salvin aka Coldblood - wearing stars and stripes armour (see images on right). In the comics, this so-called Iron Patriot suit was donned by Spider-Man villain Norman Osborn, leaving fans somewhat baffled over how it features in the story of Iron Man 3.
And the latest set photo has given us a glimpse of a sign for Advanced Idea Mechanics which, in the comics at least, is the name of a terrorist organisation. In the film, it seems more likely to be used as the title of the company that creates the Extremis nanotech, suggesting the film will be a combination of various concepts from the source material (and thus confusing the fanboys who expect a more literal interpretation).
