Film Review: Prometheus lands with a few bumps but launches epic new chapter in the Alien franchise

Prometheus ship image.jpgMUCH publicised as Ridley Scott's return to the sci-fi genre he helped define with Alien and Blade Runner, as well as a film that tackles vast metaphysical questions of where mankind came from, there is considerable expectation attached to Prometheus.

It's Twentieth Century Fox's third return to the roots of a hit franchise following last year's X-Men: First Class and Rise of the Planet of the Apes.

Amid the publicity interviews, Scott has already told us that it does show some connection to the Alien franchise but is a prequel that is still several films away from the story of his 1979 space horror classic.

Of course, neither Alien nor Blade Runner were hailed at the time; indeed, both had a very mixed reception and were slated by many top reviewers when first released. It's only over the years that they have acquired iconic status, partly because of physical sets and production designs that didn't rely too much on CGI and therefore haven't begun to look ridiculous as technology has improved.

So does Sir Ridley's latest endeavour have the ingredients of a classic?

Opening strong in overseas markets - one week ahead of its US launch - it has already taken $35 million. That includes $9.99 million in the UK, which was the territory's highest launch for a Ridley Scott movie. In the UK, 73 per cent of tickets were for the 3D version.

By now, the outline of the story is probably well known: Scientists on Earth discover identical drawings of a star map among several ancient civilisations and decide to travel there to find out if mankind was created by higher beings.

Elizabeth Shaw Noomi Rapace Prometheus EWpic.jpgShining among the cast is Noomi Rapace as Dr Elizabeth Shaw, an archaeologist brimming with wide-eyed wonder and whose strong religious faith is put to the test by events in the film. So good is Rapace that the story may have been improved if told more from her point of view.
