MARVEL'S much-touted, hotly anticipated gathering of heroes on the big screen comes in 2012 when it releases The Avengers, in which Iron Man, Thor, Captain America, Hulk, Hawkeye, Black Widow and Nick Fury join forces to battle a global threat.
But that may not be the end of ensemble epics. Besides the possibility that there will be a series of Avengers movies, it's been suggested that Marvel may also be developing an adaptation of The Inhumans.
The Inhumans are a race of superbeings who were created when aliens called the Kree visited prehistoric Earth and carried out genetic experiments on primitive Homo sapiens.
Although Marvel hasn't announced that it's working on a film version of The Inhumans, the idea makes sense because the villains in The Avengers are rumoured to be the Skrulls, the other big set of extraterrestrial baddies in the comic books. Notably, a Kree-Skrull War featured in The Avengers comics, and the Inhumans did become embroiled in that conflict.
The report of The Inhumans being turned into a movie comes from Badass Digest which describes the concept as "Rome meets Star Wars meets the X-Men."
But it says the core concept could be changed for the big screen, with the film set to reimagine them as "aliens who were put on Earth as sleeper cell aliens to eventually call back their race to take over the planet. Ultimately, the group of aliens fully assimilates and don't want to cause war."
The project is out to writers, it says, with no release date set.
