BACK in May 2010, producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura hinted that there would be fewer characters in the sequel to G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra - and we now appear to have a big clue on the reduced cast.
The information comes from Rachel Nichols, who played Scarlett in the first film. She tweeted that the only characters returning in the Jon Chu-directed sequel will be Snake Eyes (Ray Park), Storm Shadow (Lee Byung-hun) and Duke (Channing Tatum).
As well as Nichols' character, this rules out all the others including Heavy Duty (Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje), Destro (Christopher Eccleston), Baroness (Sienna Miller), Hawk (Dennis Quaid), Ripcord (Marlon Wayans), Breaker (Said Taghmaoui) and the Cobra Commander (Joseph Gordon-Levitt).
This rather dramatic casting cull for G.I. Joe 2 hasn't yet been confirmed by Paramount, so watch this space. We also don't know if the same actors will play the three characters said to be returning. But the studio did later announce a release date of August 10, 2012.
Meanwhile, a new image has been released of Hugo Weaving's evil Red Skull from this year's Captain America: The First Avenger, which is released on July 29. I should add that it's very SPOILER-ish so is included beyond the page jump in case you want to avoid seeing it.
Red Skull is a name taken by Johann Schmidt when he is grotesquely transformed by a Nazi experiment similar to the US military procedure that turns Steve Rogers into Captain America.
