Harry Potter director David Yates to make Doctor Who movie

TALK of a Doctor Who feature film has been around for some time, with speculation in 2009 suggesting it would be announced at that summer's San Diego Comic-Con.

Kai Owen, from spin-off show Torchwood, told the Coventry Telegraph he was aware of the rumours and thought a big-budget Hollywood production could work really well.

But Comic-Con came and went with no such news, although the idea resurfaced in November 2009 when the then Doctor Who showrunner Russell T Davies was asked about a film and said he would like to "give it a whirl."

Two years later, it's been revealed that Harry Potter director David Yates (pictured above) is about to start work on developing a Doctor Who movie with Jane Tranter, head of BBC Worldwide in Los Angeles.

Yates told Variety: "We're looking at writers now. We're going to spend two to three years to get it right. It needs quite a radical transformation to take it into the bigger arena."

"The notion of the time-travelling Time Lord is such a strong one, because you can express story and drama in any dimension or time."

He added that it would not follow the TV series: "Russell T. Davies and then Steven Moffat have done their own transformations, which were fantastic, but we have to put that aside and start from scratch."

He and Tranter are looking for scribes on both side of the Atlantic: "We want a British sensibility but having said that, Steve Kloves wrote the Potter films and captured that British sensibility perfectly, so we are looking at American writers too."

Yates worked with Tranter on several BBC series, including State of Play, before helming Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince and both parts of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows.

A BBC spokesman dampened the commotion caused by the news, saying it was all in the very early stages. The spokesman said: "A Doctor Who feature film remains in development with BBC Worldwide Productions in Los Angel...
