FOLLOWERS of the Spider-Man franchise will know by now that Sam Raimi's plans for a fourth movie starring Tobey Maguire collapsed over script problems, leading to Sony's decision to start all over again.
The result, The Amazing Spider-Man, directed by Marc Webb and starring Andrew Garfield, is a relaunch of the character and hits cinemas in July 2012.
But Avi Arad, an executive producer on the film, says it's not a complete reboot.
He told Entertainment Weekly it will tell the stories that happened between the events of the earlier trilogy.
Arad said: "It's not a comeback. You have to look at it this way: Do you want to know more about Spider-Man? This movie is going to tell stories that you didn't see in movies 1, 2 and 3."
He added that The Amazing Spider-Man "won't erase what came before, but will try to weave a narrative that could take place within the framework of the earlier films."
It's left fans scratching their heads a little as Garfield's version of the hero differs in having mechanical webshooters and in having Gwen Stacy as his first girlfriend, but it could be interpreted to mean that the new films will not repeat any storylines seen in the prior movies.
