Mean and moody heroes in new poster for The Avengers, plus film gets new name and release date in UK

Nick Fury Samuel L Jackson The Avengers.jpgBRINGING together a host of heroes from Marvel's solo films so far, The Avengers will soon come bursting on to our screens.

A new UK poster has today been issued for the ensemble and is included in full below. As you will see, it mentions April 26, 2012, as the UK release date. That's a day earlier than previously stated - and over a week earlier than the May 4 launch in the USA.

The accompanying press release confirms the UK debut on Thursday, April 26, but no rating or running time has yet been announced.

And, significantly, it's stated (and shown on the poster) that the film will be released in the UK under the name Marvel Avengers Assemble, supposedly to prevent any confusion with the British secret agents series from the 1960s (which was revived in the 70s and adapted into an absolutely dreadful film in 1998).

Written and directed by Joss Whedon, and produced by Marvel Studios chief Kevin Feige, the film sees a super-team put together to stop Thor's embittered stepbrother Loki and his as-yet-unknown army from laying waste to our world.
