Chronicle's Josh Trank 'in talks to direct Spider-Man spin-off Venom'

Venom.jpgANY suggestions that Sony might give up on comic book adaptations after the new Ghost Rider crashed and burned at the box office look to be way off track.

Chronicle director Josh Trank has now been linked to the studio's long-planned Spider-Man spin-off Venom.

Venom is an archenemy of Spider-Man formed when a symbiotic alien creature arrives on Earth and bonds with a human host, notably photographer Eddie Brock, giving him superhuman powers and corrupting him to the dark side.

The character was seen on screen in Spider-Man 3, with Topher Grace in the role, although the portrayal was not well received. The new film is likely to be a reboot, with Grace not expected to reprise the role.

Sony has been planning a solo spin-off for Venom since 2008, with various script drafts by Jacob Estes and Zombieland scribes Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick, before Gary Ross was set to write and direct the film. Comics writer Brian Michael Bendis hinted that he had declined an offer to pen the screenplay.

The Los Angeles Times has learned from sources that Sony is negotiating with Josh Trank, director of Fox's hit found-footage superhero film Chronicle, though the studio was not available for comment.

Trank was previously linked to Fox's planned reboot of the Fantastic Four but played down the reports when asked, saying that although he had a deal with Fox, he had not had any talks about the Fantastic Four and was focusing on original projects.

This latest news indicates that Sony is especially keen to stay in the comic book game, despite (or perhaps because of) the disappointment of Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance.

The second adventure for Nicolas Cage's flame-skulled biker was panned by critics, despite a grittier take by new directors Mark Neveldine and Brian Taylor.
