Disney boss talks Avengers sequel hopes, Kevin Feige on when it is likely to arrive

Avengers Assemble Thor Chris Hemsworth still.jpgWITH its global takings now standing at $702million - and predicted to reach $1billion by the weekend - The Avengers is the consolidation of everything Marvel has done so far as well as the perfect promotional push for all that's coming next.

Released in the UK under the alternative title of Marvel Avengers Assemble, the film has broken box office records.

There will, of course, be a sequel (probably several) and those who have seen the film's mid-credits teaser will have some idea of who is likely to be the team's opponent next time round.

Disney - which acquired Marvel for $4billion in 2009 - has confirmed that it sees the massive success of Avengers as a launchpad, with its chairman and CEO Bob Iger tonight telling US news channel CNBC: "The Avengers isn't just a film, it's a franchise from our perspective. Obviously, it was helped a lot by the success of the Iron Man movies and of Thor and Captain America.

"From The Avengers we get a chance to make Thor 2 and Captain America 2 and Iron Man 3 and hopefully another Avengers movie. So this one film, which is immensely successful - over $700m as of last night - is going to beget a number of other films and franchises."

Iger added: "We have an ability to leverage what was a very fine film done by a great group of filmmakers into something much bigger for the company, and the effect will be prolonged and that's very, very exciting for us."

As for when we are likely to see another bout of avenging on screens, a separate interview sheds light on the possibilities.

Speaking to film website CHUD, Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige says: "If we do an Avengers 2 it will be after [Iron Man 3, Thor 2, Captain America 2]. They have to grow, they have to change. What they've gone through in this movie will impact their state of mind and where they stand in their next movies.
