Comic Book Bites: Filming starts on Tom Cruise's All You Need Is Kill; Marc Webb and Andrew Garfield back for Amazing Spider-Man 2

tom-cruise-rock-of-ages-premiere.jpgFILMING began in the UK today on All You Need Is Kill, starring Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt and based on the comic book of the same name.

It's also been announced that the sci-fi thriller will open in cinemas on March 14, 2014.

Warner Bros Pictures, Legendary Pictures and Village Roadshow Pictures are behind the project, which is directed by Doug Liman and is the first film to be shot at the newly revamped and renamed Warner Bros Studios Leavesden.

The facilities, in Hertfordshire, UK, have been used for film and TV production since the 1995 Bond release GoldenEye was shot there. All the Harry Potter films, The Dark Knight, Inception and both Sherlock Holmes movies also used the studio, which was fully acquired by Warner Bros in 2010 and reopened this year after refurbishment.

In a statement announcing the start of principal photography, a full synopsis was also included as follows:

The story unfolds in a near future in which a hive-like alien race, called Mimics, have hit the Earth in an unrelenting assault, shredding great cities to rubble and leaving millions of human casualties in their wake. No army in the world can match the speed, brutality or seeming prescience of the weaponized Mimic fighters or their telepathic commanders. But now the world's armies have joined forces for a last stand offensive against the alien horde, with no second chances.

Lt Col. Bill Cage (Cruise) is an officer who has never seen a day of combat when he is unceremoniously demoted and then dropped - untrained and ill-equipped - into what amounts to little more than a suicide mission.

But, impossibly, he awakens back at the beginning of the same hellish day, and is forced to fight and die again...and again.
