Comic Book Bites: Downton Abbey, Game of Thrones actresses up for role in Captain America 2; Avengers success may impact Hulk TV show

jessica-brown-findlay-downton-abbey.jpgIN AUGUST, it was claimed that Twilight actress Anna Kendrick, Imogen Poots and Birmingham-born Felicity Jones were being considered for a role in Captain America: The Winter Soldier.

According to the latest update on Deadline, Imogen Poots (Fright Night, 28 Weeks Later) is still up for the role but alongside a new set of candidates, namely Emilia Clarke (Game of Thrones), Jessica Brown Findlay (Downton Abbey; pictured above), Teresa Palmer (I Am Number Four) and Alison Brie (Mad Men, Community).

The role isn't specified but is likely to be Sharon Carter, the descendant of Hayley Atwell's Peggy Carter in the first film. The sequel, which starts filming in March and is released on April 4, 2014, will also feature Anthony Mackie as Falcon and Scarlett Johansson reprising her role as Black Widow.

Marvel is also planning a Hulk TV series, with Guillermo del Toro developing the project. In July, he revealed it was awaiting a script overhaul and, in a new interview, he says that's still the case.

But he also suggests that the massive success of the Avengers movie - which had resounding praise for Mark Ruffalo's Hulk - may have led Marvel Studios to rethink the series.

Speaking to Shock Till You Drop, del Toro said: "Right now all I know is the official word I was given is that there's a writer they want. They are very interested in me meeting with him. He's very, very busy.

"The official word is we are holding, but I don't know... After Avengers having the success it had, perhaps the fate of the project may change.

"Officially what I know - and I'm not hiding anything off the record or anything - is that we were told we were waiting for this writer, and we were going to do it with him."

Reiterating his enthusiasm for supernatural or monster-themed comic book titles, the filmmaker expressed an interest in creating film adaptations for Swamp Thing, Etrigan The Demon (below), Doctor Strange, Morbius and Blade.

He's also working on a new F...

Roku And 3M Tell Streaming TV Users Where They Can Stick It

Roku and 3M threw a joint movie night this morning to announce the launch of a streaming projector, built on 3M technology and powered by the Roku streaming stick.

The projector is small enough to be carried around, bright enough to project a 120-inch picture, and powerful enough to pack over two and a half hours of battery life--"long enough to watch just about any movie," according to Mark Colin, 3M general manager of mobile interactive solutions. It's available for preorder now exclusively on Amazon for $299.99, and the plan is to ship devices in mid- to late-October.

Fast Company spoke with Roku CEO Anthony Wood last week, and while he stayed tight-lipped about the 3M partnership, he spoke at length about the advantages of the streaming stick, which the company launched in late September:

“For a TV company to integrate software into their TV is a multi-year process. Whereas a streaming stick, they can build TVs, [and then] decide at the last minute if they want to make it a streaming TV or not. But even though it's a stick, it does have all the advantages of being integrated. It uses the same remote control, it appears to the user as if it's built in. And it has the other advantage that you don't have with integrated software in that you can upgrade it--faster streaming sticks, more features.”

Mobile projectors, of course, have been around for a while. Where this one might have a leg up is content: The Roku streaming stick hosts over 600 channels’ worth of content, including Netflix and HuluPlus, and more recently, CNBC and Walmart’s Vudu channel, and it works wherever there’s Wi-Fi.

This morning’s event featured several inspiring tableaux with the projector, including a bedroom scenario with the projector stuck at the end of the bed, a super-fun sleepover where it pointed at the ceiling, and a backyard barbecue, complete with a bedsheet-clothesline set-up in lieu of a screen--emphasis on the flexibility and ease of use you don’t get with a traditional projector...

Restaurant Check Wallet Cuts Waits For Waiters, Takes Your Data With The Tip

We've all fallen victim to that period between finishing a meal and trying to flag down a harried and distracted waiter for the check. And some of us have also fallen victim to the estimated 70% of credit card skimming that happens at restaurants each year since it's one of the few transactions in which our cards leave our sight.

Viableware, a Seattle-based company of tech and restaurant veterans, is trying to make the experience as easy and secure as possible. Viableware makes a nondescript device called the RAIL, which is about the size and shape of the regular black book you'd normally get at the end of your meal. But the RAIL is powered by a mini-computer that lets guests at establishments pay for their food right at the table, at their leisure, without having to hand over a credit card to the waiter. It also supports different payment methods, including credit or debit cards, gift cards, and NFC mobile payments.

The RAILs, which are currently being piloted by establishments such as the Joie de Vivre Hotels in San Francisco and P.F. Chang's in Seattle, also come with useful features to make your dining experience more convenient. There's an auto-tip calculator that lets restaurants set percentages but also lets you leave a custom tip amount. There's a bill-splitting feature that lets you split the check up to nine different ways, either equally or by item (college kids, rejoice). And you can choose to get a copy of your receipt either via email or on paper.

Restaurants also have the option to load a host of different apps to their RAILs, just like you would to a smartphone. Some of the apps offered let you hail a cab to the restaurant; alert the valet service to bring your car around; Like the restaurant on Facebook; and use loyalty program points. They can even set a one-question "Rate your experience" survey to flash up after you've paid. If you answer below a certain satisfaction level, the RAIL will text the restaurant manager, who can then come and check...
