GRAPHIC NOVELS publisher Campfire is celebrating after winning two awards at Comic Con India.
The 2012 convention - officially the 2nd Annual Indian Comic Con - was held in New Delhi from February 17 to 19, a day longer than 2011's inaugural event.
This time it also introduced an awards ceremony for publishers, artists and writers from the local comics industry.
Campfire's biographical title Nelson Mandela: The Unconquerable Soul won the top prize of Best Graphic Novel.
Author Lewis Helfand was not able to attend but recorded a message saying: "I think a lot of us grew up wanting to create comic books and to have the chance to not only create comics, and create books that we believe in, but to have people respond to our work in such a positive way, is absolutely amazing."
Sankha Banerjee, who produced the art for the book, collected the prize.
Amit Tayal won Best Artist for his work on Campfire's comics adaptation of The Jungle Book.
Campfire said: "This project was a particularly challenging one, thanks to the long-standing popularity of Walt Disney's animated version.
"Amit's challenge was to bring a fresh interpretation to the characters and the story - staying true to the original while putting Campfire's individual mark on it. He exceeded everyone's expectations, showing that not only Disney can capture the hearts and minds of an audience."
Campfire spokesman Andy Dodd said after the ceremony: "Over the last four years, Campfire has endeavoured to produce the best graphic novels we possibly can. And tonight all our hard work has been made worthwhile. To win two awards at the first ever Comic Con India Awards means a great deal both to me personally and to the Campfire team as a whole.
