The Artist dances to front of 2012 Golden Globe Awards nominations

George Clooney dec 2011.jpgSTEVEN SPIELBERG'S epic and already Oscar-tipped War Horse is among the nominations for best drama at the 2012 Golden Globes.

Leading the way is The Artist, a tribute to the era of silent movies. It has garnered six nods at the awards, which are seen as a pointer for possible Oscars success.

The contenders were unveiled earlier today. Tied for second place in the number of nominations are The Help and The Descendants. Both are up for best drama, with George put forward for best dramatic actor for his portrayal of a dad trying to reconnect with his daughters in The Descendants, and The Help earning acting nominations for Viola Davis, Octavia Spencer and Jessica Chastain.

For the acting prize, George will compete against Ryan, who is nominated for The Ides of March, in which Clooney also starred.

Gosling has a second nomination for best musical or comedy actor for the romance Crazy, Stupid, Love while Clooney is up for awards for directing and co-writing The Ides of March.

Glenn Close also is a dual contender - as best dramatic actress for Irish drama Albert Nobbs and for best song for penning lyrics to its theme tune, Lay Your Head Down.

The awards, organised by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, will be held at the Beverly Hilton in Los Angeles on January 15 and will again be hosted by Ricky Gervais.

Tilda Swinton is nominated for best actress for We Need To Talk About Kevin, while Meryl Streep gets a nod for playing former prime minister Lady Thatcher in The Iron Lady.

Kenneth Branagh is nominated for the supporting actor award for his role as Sir Laurence Olivier in My Week With Marilyn.

Branagh said: "I am thrilled. It was an honour to be asked to play such an iconic actor and an even greater honour to receive this kind of support for my performance."
