RYAN REYNOLDS is reported to be in talks to star in a new Highlander film.
According to Variety, the actor is the frontrunner for the role in the reboot planned by Summit Entertainment, now part of Lionsgate. Reynolds is apparently considering other offers and may pursue another project instead.
The franchise began with a 1986 movie starring Christopher Lambert, who played Connor MacLeod, a Scottish swordsman belonging to a mysterious race of immortals.
After centuries of duelling to survive against other immortals - hence the film's tagline of 'there can be only one' - MacLeod must confront the last of his kind, a brutal barbarian called The Kurgan, who lusts for the fabled Prize.
The film spawned four sequels, two TV series, an animated series and an animated film as well as novels, comic books and games.
Summit first acquired the screen rights in 2008, with Justin Lin (Fast & Furious 3, 4, 5) initially set to direct and Iron Man writers Matt Holloway and Art Marcum penning the script.
In February 2011, Twilight screenwriter Melissa Rosenberg was hired to rework the script and in September that year, Lin dropped out to make The Fast & The Furious 6 and was replaced by Juan Carlos Fresnadillo.
Although Ryan Reynolds wielded swords as mercenary Wade Wilson in X-Men Origins: Wolverine (a role he is attached to reprise in the Deadpool spin-off), reaction to the possibility of his playing an immortal Scotsman hasn't been very positive so far.
Vinnie Jones and Ray Stevenson were previously rumoured to be in consideration and fans' most recent suggestions include Gerard Butler, Thomas Jane and Henry Ian Cusick.
