George Miller reveals new Mad Max trilogy

WANT to know what's really beyond the Thunderdome? Three more Mad Max movies, if director George Miller has his way.

So far Miller has delivered three entries in the franchise - Mad Max in 1979, Mad Max 2: The Road Warrior in 1981 and Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome in 1985.

More than a quarter of a century later the Aussie series is relaunching with Mad Max 4: Fury Road, this time with British actor Tom Hardy (Bronson, Inception, Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, The Dark Knight Rises) stepping into Mel Gibson's leather cop gear.

Fury Road hasn't been without its problems. As if 25 years of development hell were not enough, Miller's plans to start filming in September 2010 were thwarted by Mother Nature when torrential rain turned the story's dystopian desert wasteland into a flourishing flower garden and flooded the salt flats into lakes brimming with fish and pelicans.

Mad Max 2.jpgWarner Bros has now pumped extra cash into the project - which originally had a budget of $100million (US dollars) - so it can transfer production to Namibia, southern Africa. In an interview with Financial Review, it's reported that shooting of all the desert scenes will take place there from April, with additional filming and post-production back in Australia. The movie will still qualify for an Australian tax rebate.

During the interview, Miller also reveals his big plans for the franchise, saying he has written a whole new trilogy. "We started with [Fury Road], but we then started to do a second story and a third," he says. "We've written the script for the second and almost finished the third. We never intended to, they were part of the exploration of the characters."

In 2010, there had been brief talk of a fifth chapter, Furiosa, being shot back-to-back with Fury Road and it now seems the vision has expanded further.

Mad Max 4: Fury Road will also star Charlize Theron and - last we heard - the supporting cast included Nicholas Hoult, Zoe Kravitz, Adelaide Clemens, Riley...
