Robocop remake revived with new director Jose Padilha

MGM has resurrected its plans for a new version of Paul Verhoeven's 1987 sci-fi classic Robocop, with Brazilian filmmaker Jose Padilha targeted for the director's chair.

Black Swan director Darren Aronofsky had initially been attached to the reboot before moving on when the studio halted work on all its projects amid crippling $4billion debts.

Deadline reports that MGM is keen to revive the franchise and has been impressed by Padilha's work on Elite Squad and its sequel. Elite Squad 2 made $60million in the director's native Brazil last year, surpassing Avatar, Shrek Forever and Alice in Wonderland at the country's box office.

Robocop centres on a police officer who, after being brutally gunned down, is brought back to life as a cyborg - part human, part machine.

A screenwriter will be hired for this latest reimagining once Padilha is on board; David Self (Road to Perdition) had been set to pen the Aronofsky incarnation.

MGM is also preparing another James Bond movie, with Javier Bardem in talks and Sam Mendes directing.

Bardem is also keen to star in Ron Howard's adaptations of Stephen King's The Dark Tower, which is to be turned into three movies and a two-season TV series.
