ANOTHER cast member is about to join director Marc Webb's relaunch of the Spider-Man franchise.
Denis Leary is in negotiations to play police captain George Stacy, says HeatVision. The character is the father of Peter Parker's girlfriend Gwen Stacy (to be played by Emma Stone).
The 53-year-old's credits include 1993's Demolition Man and 1999's remake of The Thomas Crown Affair.
He hasn't been seen on the big screen since 2002's The Secret Lives of Dentists, though he's been heard as the voice of sabretooth tiger Diego in the Ice Age animated movies and is on the small screen in US firefighter drama Rescue Me.
In the comics, George Stacy is a supporter of Spider-Man but is killed when he shields a boy from falling masonry dislodged by the webslinger's battle with Doctor Octopus.
In the alternative continuity of the Ultimate Spider-Man stories, Stacy is younger (and called John, not George) and is not such a fan of the hero, though he still admires his crime-fighting actions. He dies in a similar way, this time protecting a child from a bomb blast caused by a villain called the Chameleon.
There's no indication of the storyline in the next Spider-Man, but with the villain identified as the Lizard (played by Rhys Ifans) rather than Doctor Octopus or the Chameleon, we shouldn't expect George Stacy's arc to follow the same path, at least not yet.
Bryce Dallas Howard and James Cromwell played Gwen and George in Sam Raimi's Spider-Man 3.
