THE author of a new Cleopatra biography has explained why she believes Angelina Jolie would be perfect to portray the legendary queen.
Stacy Schiff won a Pulitzer Prize for Cleopatra: A Life, which Sony plans to adapt into a film after producer Scott Rudin purchased the screen rights.
Back in June, Schiff had indicated she thought Jolie (pictured here as Queen Olympias in Oliver Stone's 2004 film Alexander) had the right look for the character. In a new interview published today, she elaborates on her choice.
Speaking to the Wall Street Journal, Schiff said: "Angelina Jolie is immensely interested in playing Cleopatra. If you need someone to project raw charisma and immense authority, I think she's terrific.
"The interesting thing about Cleopatra is that she is such a shape-shifter. I mean through history we've all moulded her to our times and our places. So there's room for a movie for her, but I don't think it will hew to the book. This is a woman who is persuasive beyond belief; people find her spellbinding and she is the richest person in existence.
"I don't think there are very many people that can portray that on the screen. I really can't think of anyone else who could."
