C2E2: DC talks Batman: Earth One and Night of the Owls, Superman, American Vampire, Before Watchmen and Alan Moore

Batman Earth One artwork1.jpgBATMAN and Before Watchmen were just some of the topics discussed by creators during the DC All Access and New 52 panels at Chicago's Comic and Entertainment Expo (C2E2).

Batman Earth One artwork2 Alfred.jpgPreferring to tease rather then reveal industry-shaking secrets, DC alumni - featuring editor-in-chief Bob Harras, editorial director Bobbie Chase, chief creative officer and writer Geoff Johns, J. Michael Straczynski, Shane Davis, David Finch, Kevin Maguire and Scott Snyder to name a few - were on hand during the convention to give fans just enough to keep them wanting more without too many spoilers.

One such teaser was dropped by CCO Geoff Johns when talking up the DC Free Comic Book Day issue. "It's a story that really sets the stage for a lot of things that are coming in DC Comics," he said just before quickly flashing a four-page fold-out featuring Jim Lee's art.

Also due out this year from Johns is the much delayed Batman: Earth One. "It's a very different Alfred in the book, it's a very different Commissioner Gordon," says Geoff.

"Artist Gary Frank's just doing the work of his career on this. I'm really, really excited about it. You'll actually say 'I can't believe Alfred's a badass.'"

Batman Earth One cover art.jpgTransitioning to Earth One's other hero, Superman, with the writer/artist duo of J. Michael Straczynski and Shane Davis present, we got this about the pending sequel: "Against us, we have a huge action set piece as the Parasite emerges for the first time. He's a serial killer needing energy," says JMS, with Davis adding: "The final fight will be with [the stage three] version of Parasite. Since he's a serial killer, I liked the idea he knew how to fight. I worked in things like knees to the head, there were some cheap punches." And there was also Superman eye-gouging Parasite until Straczynski deemed that too un-Superman-like.
