The Weird World of Blowfly - Trailer

Acclaimed Miami musician Clarence Reid could easily be your cranky grandfather... until he puts on the gold-spangled superhero costume of his alter ego, Blowfly, and starts singing some of the filthiest songs you've ever heard in your life. A major force in the Miami soul scene of the 60s and 70s, Reid wrote Top-10 songs for some of the greatest R&B acts of the era, while at the same time, his X-rated recordings and stage antics as Blowfly made him a star of the "party record" scene. Having changed the game in 1965 with what might be the world's first rap song, Blowfly has shocked and grooved audiences for over forty years since. Today, he is still on tour, struggling for success and recognition after 50 years of making music. An intimate and revealing portrait, The Weird World of Blowfly celebrates Reid's musical and cultural significance, and paints a picture of an unheralded, hilarious, and stunningly profane man that is as touching as it is obscene.

Disney fires Marvel’s West Coast marketing department

We're not savvy enough on the West Coast operations of Marvel to know what was behind this, but it's fairly safe to say that Disney cares much more about Marvel Studios than Marvel Comics. Implementation of the Disney-Marvel relationship has been an odd one -- on the one side, you have a corporate juggernaut who wants to reach the boy market for toys and toons. On the other, you have a company that is very much still led by chairman Ike Perlmutter, who, by some accounts, is Disney's second biggest shareholder after Steve Jobs. Marvel Studios is known for knowing the value of a penny -- something Disney also knows. But whereas Disney has controlling costs down to an art, Perlmutter has it down to a science. The relationship is still evolving.

A streaming service spawns at GameStop

GameStop continues to try and find a place in the rapidly evolving industry of video games. As many sites have previously discussed, the future seems to be moving in a digital distribution model. Gamestop knows this and is already making investments in multiple ways to distribute games digitally themselves. Take for instance their purchase of Spawn Labs back in March.

Spawn Labs are developers of a cloud based gaming service like OnLive or Gaikai. GameStop has announced they are now officially testing a beta version of the service. They are currently live streaming a number of "Xbox 360, PS3, and PC games from a data centre in Austin, TX". GameStop also hopes to begin a "closed beta" before the end of 2011 and launch the service officially a few months later in 2012.

Optimally, the service would offer a "wide selection o f high-definition video games on demand on any internet-enabled device". Meaning your smart phones could one day stream a triple-A title, provided you have the bandwidth. What a crazy future awaits us.

Resistance: Burning Skies was announced for the Vita. You can find details here.

Little Big Planet has a new trailer.

Reality Fighters has a new trailer.

Ubisoft was briefly mentioned as supporting the Vita with 6 titles, one of which will be an all new story in the Assassin's Creed franchise.

Lastly in portable news, a value priced PSP without WiFi is going to be released exclusively to Europe. Not sure why this is worth it, but I guess they really need to move some UMDs before the Vita comes out.

MoveFitness and Dancestar Party were both announced as well. Click the links to watch the respective trailers.

Infamous 2: Festival of Blood was announced. Here is the trailer. This is an all new game in the Infamous universe that will be downloadable on the PSN. Cole McGarth will be a vampire and I have no idea what the hell is going on.

Uncharted 3 has a new trailer that is incredible!

Lastly, the PS3 has received a price drop worldwide. It will now be $249.99. For more information, head over here.

Nintendo will discontinue Wii, for another Wii

Nintendo loves to iterate on their console designs. Sure the 3DS is a whole new platform, but we only arrived there after four DS redesigns. Now it appears that the Wii (at least in Europe) will be getting it's own redesign. Unlike the DS redesigns though, this one looks like it may hurt more than help...

The new unit will be bundled with Wii Party and Wii Sports. It will also include one of the new controllers, with built in "motion plus", and a Nunchuck. In order to make the unit smaller (did it really need to be?), Nintendo has axed backwards compatibility. Not only will the hardware no longer support GameCube titles, but it will not support the GameCube controllers either. Fans of Super Smash Bros. can feel free to flame away. For anyone in Europe, who still has a library of GameCube titles, make sure and buy a Wii before Christmas.

BART Toed A Blurry Legal Line In Blocking Cell Service To Thwart A Demonstration

Last week, BART blocked mobile phone services for several hours to disperse a demonstration they claimed was going to turn violent. Was it legal? The FCC is now asking. And free speech experts say it's uncharted territory that must be explored as mobile and digital communications technologies emerge.

On Thursday, August 11, Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) officials shut down mobile phone service along the public transit network's tracks under murky circumstances in order to prevent a demonstration from taking place that day. The demonstration was called to protest the shooting death of a homeless and mentally ill man named Charles Blair Hill by BART police on July 3. Hill, 45, was allegedly drunk and wielding a knife inside the Civic Center station.

BART officials activated cell phone service throughout their underground tracks last year for "public safety" reasons, which could seem ironic now. The authority's decision to block wireless signals along much of their network appears to have been the first time in the United States that any agency disrupted mobile communications in order to prevent possible civil unrest. At the time this post was written, it was still unclear whether the public transportation system had obtained--or even formally seeked--permission from the mobile phone providers whose services they disrupted. For many observers, the shutdown had disturbing echos of the propensity of foreign dictators to disrupt mobile phone communications; the same week, massive riots were taking place in Great Britain that undoubtedly influenced BART's thinking.

Shortly after the shutdown, which lasted for several hours, BART produced an awkward video justifying their shutdown of mobile communication services.

[youtube HsKEvd6gH0A]

The unruly mob BART feared would descend onto the Civic Center tracks never appeared, and BART's actions came under fire from liberals, Bay Area commuters, and BART employees. The FCC has announced an investigation.

Director and writers talk sequels to Rise of the Planet of the Apes

Caesar Rise of the Planet of the Apes.jpgTHE CREATIVE talents behind the upcoming Rise of the Planet of the Apes have revealed they have a trilogy in mind.

Screenwriters Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver hope the 20th Century Fox film, released in UK cinemas this week, will evolve into a new franchise.

The prequel/reboot led the box office with $54.8million on its earlier US launch last weekend and gathered strong reviews (83 per cent on Rotten Tomatoes), with particular praise for the "mesmerising" performance of Andy Serkis as the actor behind CGI chimp Caesar.

Silver told Entertainment Weekly that follow-up ideas were "built into the narrative".

She explained: "We definitely have ideas for where the sequel - plural, where the sequels - would take us.When we started this, we knew that this movie would stand on its own, and we designed it that way. But if it didn't stand on its own, we pictured a trilogy that would start with this movie."

Jaffa said: "There hasn't been an official discussion yet about a sequel, because I think everyone still doesn't want to jinx where we are. But we definitely have ideas.

"We do have a good sense of what will be in the sequel. Maybe in 20 years, the last one will be called Success of the Planet of the Apes."

In addition, director Rupert Wyatt revealed some very specific ideas on how to continue the story.

He told Bleeding Cool: "There's so much we could do. The ideas I've had are all sorts of things, ranging from Full Metal Jacket with apes. You could start this story again eight years from where we left off; the next generation of apes, those that have come from our protagonists, perhaps going into a conflict with humans and showing real fear, in the same way as going into war for young soldiers in this day and age, telling their story.

"Or how apes are taking over cities, and being moved into human environments and having to interact with them and deal with things that are part of our culture and understand and evolve through them."

He ...

Novel Ideas For Indie Bookstores

Bookstores won't die, but business models are changing.

In April, Borders* said its restructuring plan included bigger cafes and more novelty products. In other words, fewer books. A shift is also happening with independent bookstores--400 of which opened in the past six years--but instead of sidelining books, they're finding new ways to promote them. Here are some of their best strategies.

1//Cluster ProductsAt Brookline Booksmith in Brookline, Massachusetts, "we try to have everybody buy a book and something else," says co-owner Dana Brigham. So a third of the floor space gets ceded to products that complement nearby books: spatulas and wine stoppers next to cookbooks, say, or vases and floral stationery in the gardening section. The Payoff: The store's traffic is up about 7% within the past year, Brigham says.

2//Act LocallySquare Books in Oxford, Mississippi, casts itself as a hub of ideas--not just books--by hosting Thacker Mountain Radio, a sort of A Prairie Home Companion, on local radio. (The live audience of about 170 crams between bookshelves.) And if anyone within a mile of city limits wants a book, employees bring it to them in person. "Amazon brags about how fast they can get books to you, but we can get ours out faster," says owner Richard Howorth. The Payoff: Impossible to quantify but customer loyalty has strengthened.

3//Be A Printing Press"We wanted to give Village Books a new face," says co-owner Chuck Robinson. So in 2009 the Bellingham, Washington, store leased an Espresso Book Machine, which can print a 200-page, professional-looking book in 10 minutes. The store now produce...

Epic can ban those who spoil Gears of War 3. They have the technology.

As we all know, an early (yet somewhat complete) version of Gears of War 3 was leaked onto the internet and was absconded (or in this case downloaded) by pirates. As you can imagine, Epic is nervous that many of these people will be complete douchebags and spoil the experience for those who played fair and waited until they could buy the game legally before playing it. But there is a solution.

During a chat with Eurogamer, Gears of War 3 executive producer Rod Fergusson said that the developer has an ace up its sleeve that will prevent the game from being spoiled for the patient players who waited.

"We have a banning system built into our stuff so we can go in and identify certain people. Some people aren't smart about what they do. They'll be disappointed on 20th September when they can't get in and can't play. They may be banned."

Fergusson also said that the leaked version isn't a fair representation of the final version's polish and he also had special message to those who've pirated the game.

"If you don't value this community, you don't value this experience, then we don't value you. I'd rather pick that one bad apple out of the pool so everybody else can have a better time."

Daaaaaammmmmmn! Now that is what I call laying the smacketh down. In a verbal (and soon to be digital) sense of course.

A sleepy-eyed exurb of Los Angeles is seen through the eyes of two young Japanese tourists, stranded there with a broken rental car. Rintaro wants to leave as soon as possible, but Atsuko finds both the small town and the aimless lifestyle of the young people who live there fascinating- and, just maybe, a better example of the America she's been hoping to see than the big cities they've been traveling between. As she hangs around with the locals and begins to understand their lives (despite not speaking any English), she finds it increasingly hard to leave. The excitement of the new permeates every frame of this intimate evocation of a small town where everyone's talking, but no one really understands.
