Anime Review: 'Katanagatari: Vol. 2'
Not long ago I was sent a show for review that knocked my expectations into a cocked hat. I honestly wasn't sure what to expect from Katanagatari, based on the riot of color and shape that greeted me on the front of the product box. What I got was one of the most creative and original shows I'd seen in a long time -- well, the first half of it, anyway. There was always the chance the second half of the show wouldn't follow through, and leave us with nothing but a glossy wrapper.

How This College Dropout Wants To Change Education
Quitting college at 18 to move to Silicon Valley and pursue your startup is the stuff of Hollywood dreams. Now add a billionaire benefactor--PayPal founder and Facebook investor Peter Thiel--bankrolling you and under pressure to prove that entrepreneurship can rival Harvard as a path to success. The inaugural class of Thiel Fellows is blogging about their experiences for Fast Company. Dale Stephens wants to shake up education, one page at a time.
We live in a world where technology dominates the future, but I fundamentally believe education is a human problem. I wish curing our educational ills were as simple as making videos of lectures, or buying iPads for every student. The fact that education is more complicated than that is part of the reason I'm writing a book. Yes, one of those oldfangled paper contraptions.
When I am asked what I do, and I respond that I'm writing a book, I'm often scoffed at. In San Francisco the assumption is that if you don't have your own startup merging Airbnb, Pandora, and Dropbox, your life is a waste.
Changing education isn't quite as simple as starting a company, because we already hold beliefs about education. Before Airbnb, did you know that you needed to rent out your spare bedroom? Before Pandora did you know that you needed to stream personalized radio? Before Dropbox did you know that you needed to sync your files? The answer, in all cases, is no. However, if I asked you, "Did you know you need to get an education?" you'd be insulted. You'd also have very clear ideas about how to get an education.
Those preexisting ideas mean that changing education required more than building a technology company--it requires shifting our paradigm. I'm writing a book as the first step in shifting that paradigm and changing education. Surely technology will build solutions that help solve our educational problems, but efforts will be fruitless until we stop worshipping the SAT.
Another reason I'm writing a book is to take the time to pu...

On Being Led By The Hand into Anime
I'm currently working on some new pieces about where to begin with anime -- a common-enough question, and one that most people answer by simply throwing out a list of titles. I'm trying to take a more nuanced approach, but one of the things that did come up was how many existing anime watchers are brought into the fold by a fellow fan. If anything, that seems to be the preferred way to do it.

Filmmakers Band Together To Renew Focus On U.S. War In Afghanistan, Now In Its 10th Year
Friday, October 7th marked the 10th anniversary of the War in Afghanistan, which now surpasses the length of the official U.S. military engagement in the Vietnam War. Despite its longevity, the war has receded from daily headlines in mainstream U.S. media which tends to focus more on domestic losses, from Steve Jobs to manufacturing jobs.
But after 10 years, $450 billion dollars, 15,000 U.S. casualties and tens of thousands of Afghan civilian deaths, and with a dramatic increase in violent incidents over the past year, the war should not be ignored.
To counter the irresolution and indifference, a band of filmmakers decided to bring the war back into the popular consciousness, with a new work, Far From Afghanistan. The omnibus film was organized by John Gianvito, whose also self-produced the compelling 2001 feature The Mad Songs of Fernanda Hussein. It was produced by Steve Holmgren (Putty Hill), and features the work of Jon Jost (Last Chants for a Slow Dance, Swimming in Nebraska) Minda Martin (Free Land), Travis Wilkerson (An Injury to One), and Soon Mi Yoo (Dangerous Supplement).
If the title sounds familiar, it was inspired by and pays tribute to another collective anti-war film, Far from Vietnam (1967), which brought together New Wave film innovators including: Jean-Luc Godard, Agnes Varda, Chris Marker, and Alain Resnais. The rule-breaking, socially progressive legacy of those '60s filmmakers inspired not just the production but also the distribution of the Afghanistan film.
Faced with the reality that they could not miss an important marker of America’s longest war, its tenth anniversary this week, the Far from Afghanistan team decided to bypass conventional steps to get their film seen, such as festival submissions, funding requirements, and complicated distribution deals. They wanted to start reaching people in the most timely and effective way possible--streaming online. After an intense five-month period of planning and production, Gianvito...

How Open Data Could Make San Francisco Public Transportation Better [UPDATED]
Instead of relying on almost-never-correct schedules, Kicker Studio has come up with an innovative system to use the city's data streams to give up-to-date transit information. When can we start using it?
Unlike many cities, San Francisco offers a wealth of open data, with information available about everything from parking meters to public artwork. The trouble is, not everyone realizes quite how valuable this information can be. At last week's GOOD Design event, which pairs city leaders with designers--San Francisco director of innovation Jay Nath challenged Kicker Studio to come up with an innovative approach to educate the public on the value of open data. Kicker's solution: using data to help fix the city's busted transportation system.
Kicker had a slew of open data feeds at its disposal, including bus routes, incident reports, the fastest and safest routes, and parking information. After meeting with MUNI (San Francisco's transportation agency), Kicker discovered that NextBus--the system that updates riders on when the next bus is coming--runs off schedule data and only allows for four updates per year. That means in the case of any delays--and there are many--predicted arrival times are way off, and MUNI has no central communications system (drivers just write down incident reports and turn them in at the end of the day). Note: NextBus contacted us with updated information about this--see bottom of post.
So Kicker proposed using an SMS interface that allows for incident reports and for drivers to reroute their buses if, say, their services are needed after a ballgame and the scheduled routes can't handle all the people waiting for the bus.
Kicker even had a decent solution to the antiquated scheduling system with an interface that takes in data feeds related to traffic and traditional route timing to provide better estimates of when the bus will arrive. That same interface could allow users to crowdsource bus information, like whether there is a bellig...

UK premiere of Tekken: Blood Vengeance part of Anime All-Nighter at Oktoberfest
THE best in Japanese animation will be on screen throughout the night as part of SCI-FI-LONDON's Oktoberfest this weekend.
An anime all-nighter takes place from 11.30pm on Saturday, October 8, until 8am on Sunday, October 9, at the Odeon Camden Town. Trailers for some of the films are included below.
First up is Jin-Roh: The Wolf Brigade, the acclaimed and multi-award winning classic and the last fully hand-drawn animated feature. It's the work of Mamoru Oshii and Hiroyuki Okikura, who are responsible for other massive anime titles such as Akira and Ghost in the Shell.
There's also the latest in super-real 3D CGI with the London premiere of Tekken: Blood Vengeance - a 90-minute visual storm based on one of the world's favourite video games.
Next up is Trigun: Badlands Rumble, the first Trigun movie for over 10 years. The movie has all the elements found in the original television series - comedy, suspense, action, and drama - and is hailed as an excellent return to the Trigun universe so many people love.
Also screening is Eden of the East: Paradise Lost, the second movie from the popular TV series.
Rounding off the night is Welcome to The Spaceshow. Five kids come together to spend their summer holidays at a camp but their life changes dramatically when they come across what they believe to be a small dog, badly in need of help. The creature - known as Pochi - turns out not to be a dog at all but an alien on an important mission.
Everyone attending the all-nighter will receive a bag of goodies and some freebie treats.
Oktoberfest runs from October 7 to 9 at the Odeon Camden and Cyber Market, Camden High Street. Full details on www.sci-fi-london.com

New Technology To Save--Not Just Catch--Marine Life
After decades of more and more powerful fish-catching innovation, scientists are now developing ways for fisherman to catch just the amount, and type, of fish they need.
Technological advancement on the high seas has advanced almost in lock step with the decline of healthy fisheries around the globe. Since the 1950s, fishery collapse has been predictably preceeded by new advances that allow fisherman to hoover up ever-increasing catches: floating freezer ships, 30-mile drift nets, and open season in international waters.
But technology is also offering a glimmer of a second chance.
A combination of prudent regulation and technological innovation has started to limit overfishing and accidental bycatch of millions of tons of non-commerical sealife that is caught and dumped overboard each year--at least in some places.
In U.S. fisheries, according to a new study in Biological Conservation, turtle deaths are down 90% after regulations began requiring Turtle Excluder Devices on nets and other measures more than a decade ago. Today, an estimated 4,600 sea turtles die each year off along the U.S. coastline, down from 70,000 deaths of the 300,000 turtles caught annually in the late 1980s.
Elsewhere, small sonar devices are deterring dolphins from entering fishing nets, ship-board monitoring allows fisherman to relay the locations of endanger species such as Atlantic salmon or yellowtail flounder in nets within minutes, and special circle or "weak" hooks allow certain fish species to swim free. There has even been a collaboration between (historically hostile) fishermen and scientists leading to specialized trawls that only target individual species.
But technology can only go so far. As we reported in July, many countries are still exceeding their annual sustainable catch within several months of each year.
Sustainably harvesting the last remaining fish will do us, or them, little good. The real challenge will be finding the political will to implement all our bright ideas for...

Stop Getting Excited About Biofuels: They're Not Close To Ready
The next time you hear a story touting a new miracle biofuel ingredient, know that a new report just found that the nature-based oil won't be making an impact for decades.
Every day, it seems, we hear about a new item that can be turned into a biofuel. If everything can be a biofuel, though, shouldn't we be using them already? Maybe even switchgrass and corn husks aren’t the solution to the energy crisis after all? Maybe not yet, anyway.
Despite all the hype and palaver around cellulosic biofuels--the type derived from non-food sources, such as agricultural residues--an authoritative study has concluded that cellulosic firms are unlikely to do much for the nation’s energy security or environmental profile this decade. The technology simply isn’t ready, and investors remain wary.
The National Academy of Sciences report, written by 16 experts, looks at progress toward the Renewable Fuels Standard, a mandate to produce 32 billion gallons of biofuels by 2022. The RFS, created by Congress in 2007, calls for 15 billion gallons of corn ethanol, one billion gallons of biodiesel, and 15 billion of cellulosic fuels. But the committee finds that, while corn ethanol and biodiesel producers could hit their marks, cellulosic firms are unlikely to get near theirs.
Co-chair Wally Tyner, a professor of agricultural economics at Purdue, says many of today’s cellulosic technologies, which include a range of biochemical and thermo-chemical processes, are either unproven, or too expensive. And investors are understandably reticent.
“These plants cost between $200 to 400 million to build, the feedstocks are more expensive than people thought, the technologies are not proven, and there are no commercial plants in the United States. Put yourself in the shoes of an investor. You're being asked to put up all this money to produce a product that's not economic, where the only guarantee is the federal government, through the Renewable Fuel Standard, which could change tomorrow.”...
