Comic Book Bites: Transformers, Avengers, X-Men, Powers
By Michael Pellegrini
NEXT month sees more robot action in Transformers: Dark of the Moon, which this time features Rosie Huntington-Whiteley as the love interest.
You'll recall that Victoria's Secret lingerie model Rosie joined the cast after the abrupt exit of Megan Fox. And that controversy has reared its head again, with more insight into what happened.
Ms Fox's departure - which came after she compared Michael Bay to Hitler - is mentioned in a cast and crew interview running in GQ this July.
In excerpts from the interview, featured on the magazine's website, Bay reveals the film's executive producer Steven Spielberg had been the one behind the decision to axe Megan from the project. Bay says: "She was in a different world, on her BlackBerry. You gotta stay focused. And you know, the Hitler thing. Steven said 'Fire her right now.'"
Spielberg's response to Fox's ill-judged remarks comes as no surprise, especially if you consider he used the profits of his film Schindler's List to set up the Shoah Foundation, which archives the testimonies of Holocaust survivors.
On the Avengers front, Samuel L. Jackson has told how he got into trouble with Marvel after his script for the superhero ensemble was stolen and offered for sale on the internet.
Jackson (right) tells WENN: "When they sent me the new version of the script, I was shooting a film in Toronto and my assistant copied it from the email [and printed it] in the office somewhere. And by the time we got to Albuquerque someone had stolen the script out of the printer and put it online for sale.
"I didn't know printers had memories. And apparently my assistant didn't either. Marvel/Disney kind of got really upset about it. It caused a minor storm of investigation. They sent a team of investigators to Canada. They were trying to [track down] the IP address of the person that put it online. It was crazy."

Behind the scenes on the special effects for X-Men: First Class
WATCH any sci-fi or fantasy movie and you'll probably think the special effects are obvious.
It's all the parts that quite clearly cannot be real, right? In X-Men: First Class, you would have looked at such things as Azazel's teleportation, Emma Frost's transformation into diamond, Riptide's tornadoes or Sebastian Shaw's energy absorption and decided those were the sections that had to be done by computer technicians.
And for many people who aren't fans of the genre, those conspicuous fantasy elements would be the point where they cannot suspend disbelief and immerse themselves into the movie.
But is it really that simple?
The answer is 'no'. Making any multi-million-dollar blockbuster involves far more than digitally painting in a few blatantly flashy bits here and there.
In the case of X-Men: First Class, you can find out exactly how much painstaking work went on to bring us the new mutant adventure, thanks to an article by FX Guide that offers an incredible insight into the production.
We are told there were more than 1,000 visual effects shots in the film, created by a number of companies and co-ordinated by John Dykstra.
Far from destroying the magic and mystery, the article's detailed explanation of what went on behind the scenes brings a new level of appreciation and amazement to the finished product on our screens (and the movie is well worth checking out, if you haven't done so already).
I'm not going to reproduce the entire article here but it's worth mentioning a few points that particularly caught my attention before directing you to read the whole piece over at FX Guide. If you haven't seen the film, there are spoilers, so be warned.
Special effects company Rhythm & Hues worked on Emma Frost, Mystique and Angel as well as scenes with the X-Jet, the Lincoln Memorial and a CIA facility.
The team first had to come up with an interesting and visually convincing concept for how Emma's diamond power worked: "We...

Bill Gates Challenges Global Leaders at 64th World Health Assembly: Make Vaccines a Priority to Save 10 Million Lives

No, There are No Snakes in Hawaii

I don't like spiders and snakes
And that ain't what it takes to love me
You fool, you fool
I don't like spiders and snakes
And that ain't what it takes to love me
Like I wanna be loved by you
No, there are no snakes in Hawaii - none, nada, zip, zilch, period!
Well wait... technically, there are snakes in Hawaii but it's not really out of line to claim there are none. Hawaii does have one native snake species, the island blind snake, (or as I like to say ramphotyphlops braminus). They're usually mistaken for a worm though and are definitely not any kind of a major threat.
See, Hawaii has invested millions of dollars into fighting invasive species, including snakes which could cause havoc in the islands. Still, some snakes make it through the state's snake defense systems (SDS) - speople smuggling snakes into Hawaii as exotic pets for example. Not good at all.
Fortunately, no snake species has been able to gain a presence here. If you spot a snake in Hawaii, call 911 or 586-PEST (7378) right away. And if you brought one in, it may be surrendered without consequence under the state's amnesty program.
Aloha ~
Ali
